North Sonoma: An Authentic Experience
Head north of Sonoma Valley and you’ll find a region known for having the most small family wineries. The North Sonoma region includes Russian river and Healdsburg – towns filled with history and charm. And the authentic Sonoma wineries are incredible too! It’s time we dive into this hidden treasure and explore its beginnings.
History of North Sonoma
The Pomo People first settled here and created their
villages along the Russian River. Anglo-American, Russian, and Mexican settlements
started to develop in the mid-19th century. 1857 brought the
founding of Healdsburg when Harmon Heald purchased the land and eventually the
town gained traction with the creation of the Northwest pacific Railroad.
Commerce, agriculture, and tourism grew.
North Sonoma Wineries Today
There are more than 60 diverse varietals in Sonoma, but Pinot
Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay are most dominant. Healdsburg boasts charming
19th century architecture, fine dining, boutiques, high-end inns and
spas, and of course some of the best North
Sonoma wineries. Healdsburg is famous for
its Zinfandel but all types of wines can be found here.
